The diet composition of some economically important fishes in the three floodplain lakes in Agusan Marsh wildlife sanctuary in the Philippines

Abstract

Food of freshwater fishes in the three floodplain lakes in Agusan Marsh, Philippines were identified and quantified. Different types of gear, namely, two types of hook and line, traps and scoop nets were used to collect samples. Results indicated that the volume of food in the guts of Channa striata, Trichogaster pectoralis, Trichogaster trichopterus, Anabas testudineus, Oreochrotnis niloticus and Clarias batracitus was generally larger during flood months than during the dry season. Feeding activity varies as water level fluctuates. Incidence of empty stomachs in Channa striata markedly increased as the dry season proceeded. Relative importance index showed that in the floodplain ecosystem, the utilization of detritus especially among belontids, cichlids and cyprinids was high.
