In memory of Professor Sena S. De Silva, an internationally renowned Sri Lankan fisheries and aquauclture scientist, who peacefully passed away in Melbourne, Australia, on 6 May, 2020, Sri Lanka Association for Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (SLAFAR) decided to establish “Professor Sena S. De Silva memorial research scholarship scheme” to support the needy postgraduate (M. Phil. and Ph. D.) students in the fields of fisheries in Sri Lanka universities.
Professor Sena S. De Silva was respected and admired by the global fisheries and aquaculture community for his 40 years of enduring commitment and profound dedication to the science he loved. After serving few years as an Assistant Lecturer in Zoology at the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, he moved to United Kingdom and obtained his Ph.D. in Fisheries Biology, from the University of Stirling, Scotland. in June 1973. Following his return to Sri Lanka in 1973, he continued his teaching and research at the University of Kelaniya, until he was appointed as Professor of Zoology at the University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka, in 1978. Professor De Silva continued his carrier at the University of Ruhuna until October 1988. Then he moved to National University of Singapore, in 1989, where he served as a Senior Visiting Fellow until 1991, after which he joined the Deakin University, Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia and served as the Coordinator of the Post-graduate Degree Courses in Aquaculture. He served as the Professor in Aquaculture and Fisheries Management, & Director Research, Deakin University until August 2006. In recognition of his research contributions to Reservoir Fisheries Management and Aquaculture. Sena was conferred the degree of Doctor of Science by the University of Stirling, Scotland, United Kingdom in June 1989. He was also conferred an honorary degree of Doctor of Science, by the University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka in 1996.
Professor Sena S. De Silva memorial research scholarship scheme, established by SLAFAR aims at providing financial support to needy postgraduate (M. Phil. and Ph. D.) students in the fields of fisheries, aquatic ecology and aquaculture and fisheries economics and Sociology registering in Sri Lanka universities.
